Iago's Hatred for Othello

Iago's hatred for Othello was first shown when Iago spoke of Othello to Roderigo about how he hated Othello for not choosing him as his lieutenant (second in command), even after proving to him in front of his eyes that he was capable of fighting in battles.

Though, Othello had chosen Michael Cassio, a man who have read and acquired knowledge about battles through the books he read. But Cassio had no experience in leading an army. Regardless of this, Othello gave the position of his lieutenant to Cassio rather than Iago.

Iago is someone that had been loyal to Othello and his orders before Othello had chosen his lieutenant. This unfairness lead Iago to hate Othello, with Iago stating that Othello's choice was due to favoritism rather than the practical skills one have of leading an army.

In addition, Iago also stated that his suspicions of Othello sleeping with his wife in the past had come to mind after knowing about Othello's secret marriage to Desdemona, increasing Iago's hate on Othello.
